The
Rev. Robert A. Crum was sent to Davenport to organize the first
new Methodist congregation in the area in over forty years. On July
1, 1965 he moved his family into the first parsonage and two weeks
later rented the banquet room at Thirty Lanes Bowling Alley. He
arranged to have a curtain block off the bar from the "Church"
area. Fifty-seven people attended the first worship service
on July 18, 1965 and officers were appointed to carry out church
responsibilities at the planning session that followed.
Christ Methodist Church was
named by the congregation on September 26 and was officially chartered
on October 10th with 109 members. Within 7 short months from their
first worship service this new congregation became engaged in the
task of constructing a building on a five and one-half acre site
at 2330 W. 41st St. In February of 1966 the congregation
accepted architect's plans for a building of six rooms, a kitchen
and fellowship hall, which would service as both sanctuary, dining
hall, and meeting area with folding chairs and tables put up and
taken down to accommodate the specific activity.
A 24-hour
prayer vigil was held in conjunction with a building fund drive
that produced the successful outcome of $45,000 being pledged. In
the Fall of 1966, construction began on the new church building
that could eventually accommodate 750 people.
The Christ
Methodist Church building was consecrated on Sunday, April 30,
1967 and became known as Christ United Methodist Church on April
23, 1968 when the Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United
Brethren Church.
Christ
United Methodist Church steadily increased in membership and
within a few years, began to outgrow the original structure. In
September of 1974, a building committee was again organized to study
needs and the possibility of constructing additional facilities.
Then after 2 years of careful study, the congregation voted final
approval to build a new sanctuary, classrooms, and offices. On November
11, 1979, a second cornerstone was laid and the new sanctuary additional
was consecrated on Sunday, March 9, 1980.
Christ
Church continued to seek where God was leading and before long,
new studies of needs and planning were underway and ultimately led
to the "Fly Like Eagles" campaign to build the Great Hall
addition. The Great Hall had a fantastic initiation: first on February
7,2001 with nearly 500 people attending the Pine Street High First
Night Party, then with an Open House reception and tours on February
11 and with the first 9:30 Contemporary Worship Service on Easter
Sunday, April 5, 2001.
